My Top Films of 2012

As the year comes to an end, I have been looking through what movies I was able to see. I have worked it out that I have seen only about 40 of the new releases this year, which, as a huge film buff, I am a little disappointed with. However, every time I came out of the cinema, I was filled with more inspiration and more drive than when I went in. The cinema is a magic place, and the big screen is where I truly feel my home lies. Out of the films I have seen, I decided to pick my top 10, I mean 11 films of the year (as everyone else seems to be talking about it). So here we go.
My Top 11 films of the year: (in order of release not preference)
  1. Argo: By far my number 1. Excellent screenplay and superb direction. One of the only films that have truly kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. It incorporated brilliant comic relief moments by Alan Arkin and John Goodman! Just a masterpiece!!
  2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Indeed right up here in my top 10. The film was lead by an outstanding young actor, Logan Lerman. Again, this film holds a very special place in my heart, but Lerman’s performance was what really took me on a journey and made the film for me.
  3. Searching for Sugarman: A great documentary that I found totally moving! This film has a close place in my heart; because of the ties I have to South Africa and also the fact that my parents never stopped playing Rodriguez’s album. It was also an incredible display of brilliant documentary filmmaking and blew my family and me away.
  4. Ill manors: What an innovation in filmmaking. The narrator was by far the best part of the film. Combining music, lyrics and story together resulted in a flawless film. I loved the editing and colours. It was a new gangster film and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
  5. The Imposter: One of the most brilliant documentaries I have seen. I loved the combination of styles. It felt like I was watching a thriller, which made the fact it was a documentary even scarier. Incredible film, for those who like documentaries and for those who like fiction!
  6. The Intouchables: Pure beauty. I came out of the film feeling elated and inspired. The story was moving and the performances were impeccable. A must see!
  7. Silver Linings Playbook: Pure excellence. A remarkable portrayal of depression and bipolar. I was truly blown away. Really lifted me and I just found it a bit of magic. Performances were exceptional from everyone and just a fantastic film.
  8. Rust and Bone: Another inspiring piece of French cinema. I seem to find their films just beautiful. There is no other word to describe it. This film and everything about it was just beautiful!
  9. The Avengers: Pure entertainment! It kept me engaged and transported into this world. The performances were epic and the visuals were unbelievable. A truly great film that I could watch over and over again, or even better, act in the sequel =]
  10. Lawless: Two words – Tom Hardy. Another excellent performance by an incredible actor. A character based gangster film and it was outstanding. I really felt a huge connection to the story and found it thoroughly entertaining and a great watch. Definitely getting it on DVD!
  11. The Hobbit: Now, this was exactly what I wanted from The Hobbit. I found it exhilarating with stunning cinematography and brilliant story. I was originally worried about it being made into three films, but now I am just super excited for the next ones!
So there we have it. I am pretty sure Life of Pi would also be on my list, but sadly I wasn’t able to see it! I will add my thoughts when I do!!
